Reality Checks for Lucid Dreams

Simple tests that trigger dream awareness

Reality checks are simple tests you perform throughout the day to determine whether you are awake or dreaming. Done as a habit, they eventually carry into dreams and trigger lucidity.

How Reality Checks Work

A reality check is a quick test of your environment to confirm whether you are in waking life or a dream. The idea is that by questioning reality many times a day while awake, the habit becomes automatic and eventually surfaces within a dream. When you perform the check in a dream, the result reveals that you are dreaming, triggering lucidity. Consistency is essential, since the habit must be strong enough to cross into sleep.

Common Reality Checks

Several reliable checks exploit the strange physics of dreams. Trying to push a finger through your opposite palm often succeeds in a dream; looking at text or a clock, glancing away, and looking back usually shows it has changed; and pinching your nose while trying to breathe may still let air through in a dream. Counting your fingers, which often appear distorted or too many in dreams, is another classic. Performing two or three different checks together improves reliability.

Building the Habit

The key to effective reality checks is doing them genuinely and often — ideally many times a day, and especially whenever something feels slightly odd. It helps to pair them with regular triggers, such as walking through a doorway or checking your phone. Crucially, you should truly question whether you might be dreaming each time, rather than performing the check mechanically. When the habit is strong and sincere, it eventually appears in a dream and hands you lucidity.
