What is the Root Chakra?

The Root chakra, or Muladhara, is the first of the seven chakras and the foundation of the entire energy system. Located at the base of the spine and governed by the Earth element, it is the seat of your sense of safety, stability and belonging. It governs your most basic needs — survival, security, shelter and the feeling of being at home in your own body. When the Root is strong and open, you feel grounded, secure and able to meet life from a place of stability. As the root of the tree of your being, its health supports every chakra above it.
