The command position and the art of restful energy
What is Bedroom Feng Shui?
The bedroom is feng shui's most personal room: you spend a third of your life there in your most receptive state, so its energy shapes your rest, health and relationships more intimately than any other space. The cornerstone is the command position — the bed placed so you can see the door without lying directly in line with it, ideally with a solid wall behind the headboard. Around this centre, bedroom feng shui pursues one goal: yin energy — soft, calm, restorative — protected from the yang intrusions of work, screens and storage chaos. A bedroom arranged by these principles reads instantly as sanctuary; one arranged against them explains many a bad night.
How to Apply Bedroom Feng Shui
Put the bed in command: diagonal from the door with a clear view of it, headboard against a solid wall, never feet-first toward the door
Give the bed two flanks: space and a nightstand on each side, supporting balance (and, for couples, equality)
Banish or hide the yang invaders: work desks, exercise gear and especially screens — or screen them off at night
Choose soft, layered, warm lighting and skin-tone or earth palettes over bright whites and reds
Clear under the bed: energy should flow beneath you while you sleep, not press up through stored chaos
Common Mistakes
The 'coffin position' — feet pointing straight out the door — and beds under windows, both classically draining placements
Mirrors facing the bed, which feng shui holds disruptive to sleep and to couples' fidelity
Under-bed storage of anything emotionally heavy — old letters, unfinished projects — radiating unfinished business all night
Quick Tips
If the bed can't move into command, a mirror positioned to show you the door restores the effect
Pairs everywhere in a couple's room: two lamps, two tables, two pillows of equal rank
Books are yang — keep a book or two, not a library, at the bedside
When sleep is poor, subtract before you add: the bedroom cure is usually removal
