Hexagram 44: Coming to Meet — I Ching Meaning

ChineseKou TrigramsHeaven over Wind Symbol

The Judgment

Coming to Meet: the maiden is powerful; one should not marry such a maiden. One dark line has entered beneath five strong ones — the seemingly harmless element arriving from below, charming, small, and bearing the whole next season of darkness in its seed. The judgment is a border-guard's counsel: what comes to meet you now must be assessed at the gate, for what is admitted lightly cannot lightly be expelled.

The Image

Under heaven, wind: the prince acts when disseminating his commands and proclaiming them to the four quarters of heaven. Wind reaches everywhere — and so do beginnings; the wise announce their standards clearly, so what approaches knows the terms of entry.

What This Hexagram Means for You

Something — or someone — is coming to meet you: an offer, an attraction, an opportunity, a small compromise, arriving with charm and perfect timing. The oracle does not say all such arrivals are evil; it says examine this one at the gate, because it carries growth-potential, and what grows should be chosen deliberately. Ask the border questions: what does this become in a year? what does it displace? why does it flatter? Decline what fails the test — firmly, early, while declining is still simple. The great darknesses all entered as small welcomes.
