Hexagram 55: Abundance — I Ching Meaning

ChineseFêng TrigramsThunder over Fire Symbol

The Judgment

Abundance has success. The king attains abundance. Be not sad; be like the sun at midday. Thunder and lightning together — clarity in action, greatness at its peak: the hexagram of fullness. And within the blessing, the famous counsel against the shadow it casts: such zeniths do not last, and knowing it, one is tempted to grieve at noon. Do not — the only correct response to the sun at its height is to shine with it.

The Image

Both thunder and lightning come: the superior person decides lawsuits and carries out punishments. At the peak of clarity and power, the wise settle what needs settling — abundance of light is for judging justly what dimmer hours could not see.

What This Hexagram Means for You

You are at, or approaching, a peak — a season of abundance, clarity and success at full noon — and the oracle gives the rarest kind of counsel: how to be blessed well. Shine without holding back, and settle your great matters now, because peak light is exactly when hard decisions can be seen truly. And meet the melancholy of noon — the whisper that this cannot last — with the sun's own answer: it is not supposed to last; it is supposed to be full. Gather this harvest wholly, judge your lawsuits, fund the future from the surplus. Sadness at midday is the only failure available to you here.
