Binah, meaning Understanding, is the third sephirah and the receptive counterpart to Chokhmah. It takes the raw flash of wisdom and gives it form, structure and meaning — the great mother of the Tree of Life.

Where Chokhmah is the flash of insight, Binah is the deep comprehension that shapes it into something graspable. Traditionally feminine and receptive, Binah is called the Great Mother, the womb in which creation is given form. It is understanding as depth, limitation and the bringing of ideas into definition.
Binah sits at the head of the left-hand Pillar of Severity, opposite Chokhmah. Together with Chokhmah it forms the 'supernal' pair just below Keter, the first division into active and receptive forces. As the top of the left pillar, it represents form, restriction and structure. It receives Chokhmah's outpouring and gives it boundaries, making creation possible.
Spiritually Binah represents the deep understanding that contains and shapes divine energy, giving the formless a form. It is associated with the receptive, nurturing and also the sorrowful aspect of creation, since to give form is to impose limits. Contact with Binah brings profound comprehension and the ability to hold great truths. It teaches that structure and limitation are what allow the infinite to become manifest.
