Gevurah sits on the left-hand Pillar of Severity, below Binah and directly opposite Chesed. It forms the essential counterbalance to Chesed's expansion, the two together held in equilibrium by Tiferet below. As part of the left pillar, it represents restriction, form and contraction. Its judgement gives structure to Chesed's mercy, so that creation is ordered rather than chaotic.
