Body Scan Meditation — How to Practice & Benefits

Sweeping attention through the body, part by part

What is Body Scan Meditation?

The body scan is the practice of moving attention slowly and systematically through the body — from toes to crown or crown to toes — feeling each region from within and releasing it before moving on. Rooted in the Burmese vipassana tradition of U Ba Khin and S.N. Goenka and made famous in the West as a core practice of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, it retrains the mind to inhabit the body rather than merely pilot it. The scan develops interoception — the felt sense of the body's interior — and dissolves the accumulated tension that hides in jaws, shoulders and bellies below the threshold of notice. It is also, practically speaking, one of the most reliable natural sleep aids ever devised.
