Ascending the seven energy centres with breath and light
What is Chakra Meditation?
Chakra meditation works with the seven energy centres of the yogic subtle body — from the root at the base of the spine to the crown above the head — using attention, breath, colour and sound to sense, clear and balance each in turn. Rooted in the Tantric traditions of medieval India, the practice treats the chakras as a ladder of consciousness: each centre governs a domain of life (survival, pleasure, will, love, expression, insight, transcendence), and meditation ascends through them like a gardener watering seven beds. Whether approached as literal energy anatomy or as a profound psychological map, the practice offers something rare: a complete guided tour of the inner life in a single sitting.
How to Practice Chakra Meditation
Sit with a straight spine and breathe slowly; picture the spine as a channel of light connecting earth to sky
Bring attention to the root chakra at the base of the spine: visualise a glowing red light there, breathe into it for several breaths, and silently sound its mantra LAM if you wish
Ascend centre by centre — sacral (orange, VAM), solar plexus (yellow, RAM), heart (green, YAM), throat (blue, HAM), third eye (indigo, OM) — giving each the same attention, colour and breath
At the crown, visualise violet-white light opening upward, and rest in the full column of colour running through you
Descend briefly back to the root to ground, feel the whole spine glowing, and close with a few ordinary breaths
Benefits of Chakra Meditation
Provides a structured full-spectrum check-in — you discover which life areas feel blocked or vivid
Combines visualisation, breath and mantra, engaging restless minds that plain sitting loses
Deepens the sense of the body as energetic and alive rather than mechanical
The grounding root work steadies anxiety; the heart and crown work opens warmth and perspective
Builds a personal vocabulary for emotional states ('my throat chakra is tight before this call')
Tips for Beginners
Spend extra breaths on centres that feel dim or tense — the practice is diagnostic as well as balancing
Colour visualisation is a skill: begin with just warmth or pulsing at each point if colours won't come
Always ground at the root after crown work; floating off is pleasant but unhelpful at dinner
