Last Quarter Meaning — Rituals & Intentions

The half-dark — release, forgiveness and letting go

What is the Last Quarter?

The Last Quarter Moon shows the opposite half-disc from the First Quarter — the left side lit, in the northern hemisphere — rising near midnight and standing high at dawn. Three-quarters of the cycle is complete. Spiritually this is the great clear-out: as light yields to darkness, the phase governs release, forgiveness and the conscious ending of what the cycle is finished with. It is the exhale of the lunar month.

Spiritual Meaning

The Last Quarter is the crossroads of release — half light, half dark, asking a single question: what are you still carrying that the new cycle should not inherit? Its energy supports endings performed deliberately rather than suffered passively — the resignation delivered, the apology made, the grudge finally set down. Forgiveness is this phase's deepest medicine, of others and of yourself, for everything the cycle did not become. Traditions treat these nights as ideal for banishing, decluttering and severing cords. The phase teaches that letting go is not loss but hygiene of the soul.

Setting Intentions During the Last Quarter

At the Last Quarter, intentions invert: instead of asking what you want, ask what you are done with. Name your releases as concretely as you once named your goals — vague letting-go releases nothing. This is also the phase for honest review: what worked this cycle, what didn't, and what the next cycle should learn from both. A clean ending is the finest gift you can give your next beginning.
