Shunya Mudra — Meaning & How to Practice

Mudra of Emptiness · The gesture of space — silence for the inner ear

What is Shunya Mudra?

Shunya mudra — the mudra of emptiness or space — folds the middle finger down to the base of the thumb, the thumb resting gently over it, other fingers extended. The middle finger carries akasha, the space element, associated with the ears, hearing and the inner sense of openness. Decreasing excess space is the mudra's traditional office: it is the classical gesture for ear complaints — ringing, dullness, vertigo's hollow spin — and for the psyche's version of them, the feeling of being vacant, unmoored or deaf to oneself. Emptiness, rightly measured, becomes silence one can rest in.

How to Perform Shunya Mudra

Benefits

Best Time to Practice

Practise shunya mudra 10–15 minutes as needed for ear and balance complaints, releasing it when they ease. For meditation on silence, hold it in the quietest hour available — early morning or deep evening — letting the day's sounds fall away behind it.
