Surya Mudra — Meaning & How to Practice

Mudra of the Sun · The gesture of inner fire — metabolism, warmth and drive

What is Surya Mudra?

Surya mudra — the sun mudra — folds the ring finger to the base of the thumb with the thumb pressed over it, other fingers extended. The gesture decreases the earth element (the ring finger) in favour of fire: kindling agni, the inner sun that governs digestion, metabolism, warmth and vitality. It is the traditional mudra for sluggishness in all its forms — cold hands, heavy digestion, low motivation, the banked fire that needs air. Where vayu mudra calms, surya ignites.

Best Time to Practice

Surya mudra belongs to the morning — practised 10–15 minutes on an empty stomach, ideally in sunlight. Use it before undertakings requiring energy and through cold, heavy seasons; avoid overuse in hot weather or fiery temperaments, and release it if overheating or irritability arises.
