Vayu mudra — the air mudra — folds the index finger down to the base of the thumb, with the thumb pressing gently over it, other fingers extended. Where gyan mudra balances the air element, vayu mudra actively decreases it: in Ayurvedic terms it pacifies excess vata — the wind that manifests as restlessness, racing thoughts, tremor, cramping and scattered nervous energy. The pressed-down index finger is the wind held gently under the thumb of consciousness. It is the mudra of the overstimulated age.
Vayu mudra is a remedy mudra: use it whenever wind rises — anxiety, restlessness, digestive turbulence — for 10–15 minutes at a time, and release it once calm returns. Early morning and bedtime practice suits chronic restlessness; it need not be held indefinitely once balance is restored.
Each mudra tunes a current in the body's energy map. Explore the seven chakras that map guides.
