Distance Reiki is the practice of sending healing energy to someone who is not physically present, using the distance symbol and focused intention. It is one of the practice's most intriguing features.
Distance Reiki rests on the idea that energy is not bound by physical space, so it can be directed to a recipient anywhere. Using the traditional distance symbol, the practitioner sets a clear intention to connect with the person and sends energy as though they were present. Many use a photograph, a written name, or visualise the recipient to establish the connection. The recipient need not be actively participating, though many arrange a quiet time to receive.
Practitioners use several methods to send Reiki at a distance, often with the help of a focus object. Some use a proxy — a pillow, a teddy bear, or their own knee — to represent the recipient's body, treating it with the usual hand positions. Others simply hold the person in mind while channelling energy for a set period. The distance symbol is drawn or visualised to bridge the gap, and the session is closed with gratitude much like an in-person treatment.
Distance Reiki makes the practice available when meeting in person is impossible, whether because of geography, illness or busy schedules. It allows practitioners to support loved ones far away and lets clients receive sessions from home. Recipients often report the same warmth and relaxation as in a hands-on session. Whatever one makes of the mechanism, many find distance sessions a comforting and convenient way to receive the practice.
