Reiki Hand Positions

Where the hands rest during a treatment

Reiki treatments follow a series of hand positions that move over the body, allowing energy to reach each area in turn. These positions give a session its gentle, methodical structure.

The Traditional Sequence

Traditional Reiki uses a set sequence of hand positions that typically begins at the head and moves down the body toward the feet. The practitioner rests their hands lightly on or just above each position, holding each for a few minutes before moving on. The sequence is designed to cover the whole body, including areas associated with the major energy centres. This systematic flow ensures no region is overlooked during a full treatment.

Hands On or Above the Body

Reiki can be given with hands resting gently on the body or hovering a little above it, according to comfort and preference. There is no pressure, massage or manipulation — the touch is still and light, meant only to channel energy. Recipients remain fully clothed throughout, and sensitive areas are always avoided or treated with hands held above. The emphasis is on gentle presence rather than physical technique.

Following Intuition

While the standard positions provide reliable structure, experienced practitioners often let intuition guide them to areas that seem to need more attention. They may sense heat, tingling or a pull toward a particular spot and linger there. The hand positions are best seen as a trustworthy framework rather than a rigid rule. Combining the traditional sequence with attentive intuition makes each session responsive to the individual receiving it.
