Reiki uses a set of sacred symbols, traditionally taught in the second level, to focus and direct healing energy for specific purposes. Each symbol acts as a key to a particular quality of the practice.
Traditional Usui Reiki works with several key symbols, each serving a distinct function. The power symbol is used to increase and focus energy; the mental-emotional symbol supports harmony and healing of the mind and feelings; the distance symbol allows energy to be sent across space and time. A further master symbol is reserved for the teaching level. These symbols were traditionally kept secret and passed only from teacher to student.
Practitioners activate a symbol by drawing it in the air, visualising it, or tracing it over the body, often while silently repeating its name. The symbol is understood to act like a switch, tuning the energy to a particular purpose — more power, emotional healing, or distance sending. They are tools of intention and focus rather than magic in themselves. With practice, many practitioners feel the shift in energy each symbol brings.

In recent decades the once-secret symbols have become widely published, and different lineages use slightly different forms.
