The Tree of Life is a sacred geometric diagram of ten spheres joined by connecting paths, central to Kabbalah. It maps the structure of creation and the soul's journey toward the divine.
In its geometric form the Tree of Life consists of ten circles, called sephirot, arranged in a specific pattern and joined by twenty-two connecting paths. The spheres descend in three columns from a single source at the top to the material world at the base. This diagram can be derived from the overlapping circles of the Flower of Life, linking it to the wider family of sacred geometry. It is at once a map, a ladder and a portrait of the whole of existence.
The Tree of Life symbolises the structure of creation and the stages through which divine energy descends into the physical world. Each of its ten sephirot represents a distinct aspect or emanation — wisdom, understanding, beauty, strength and so on — while the paths between them are stages of the soul's development. It portrays the unity of all things and the route by which consciousness returns to its source. It is a complete cosmological and spiritual map in geometric form.
The Tree of Life is used today as a meditation and study tool, especially within Kabbalah and Western mysticism. Practitioners trace its paths to explore states of consciousness and aspects of the self. It appears widely in jewellery, art and tattoos as a symbol of growth, connection and spiritual life. Even outside its original tradition it is embraced as an emblem of the interconnection of all living things.
Spiritually the Tree of Life charts the soul's ascent from the material world back toward the divine source. Meditating on its spheres and paths is a practice of inner development, each sephirah a quality to be cultivated and understood. It teaches that the human being mirrors the structure of the cosmos, a microcosm of the whole. As a map of both creation and return, it remains one of the most profound symbols in mysticism.
