Hexagram 12: Standstill — I Ching Meaning

ChineseP'i TrigramsHeaven over Earth Symbol

The Judgment

Standstill: evil people do not further the perseverance of the superior person. The great departs; the small approaches. Heaven withdraws upward, earth sinks downward — the powers face away from each other, and nothing passes between them. It is the autumn of situations: communication fails, mediocrity advances, and the wise withdraw rather than argue with the season.

The Image

Heaven and earth do not unite: the superior person falls back upon inner worth to escape the difficulties, not permitting themselves to be honoured with revenue. When the outer world rewards the wrong things, the wise decline its prizes and keep their value inward.

What This Hexagram Means for You

Something in your situation has genuinely stalled — the channels are blocked, the wrong voices carry, and pushing harder only spends you against a closed gate. The hexagram's counsel is strategic withdrawal: stop negotiating with what will not hear, protect your standards quietly, and invest this season in inner work that no standstill can touch. Do not sell your principles for a seat at a stagnant table. Standstill is a phase, not a verdict — hexagram by hexagram, it always turns.
